A beautiful French mid- Victorian era locket crafted in 18K rosy yellow gold with a motif of grapes and vines growing on a trellis. The grapes are represented by variously hued seed pearls, while the leaves are set with old rose cut diamonds. There are a total of approximately 1 carat in diamond weight.
A beveled glass cover set in the back can be opened to add photographs or other mementos. The hinge opens and closes smoothly. The original bale is set with three seed pearls for continuity of design. Along the jump ring are two hallmarks. The first is the French Mercury head hallmark, indicating a Paris export mark with 18K gold purity from the years 1840-1879. The other hallmark is undecipherable but likely a makers mark.
A great antique locket for wine lovers or enthusiasts of Victorian symbolism found in jewelry.
