A fashionable tool from the Victorian era is this 14K yellow gold skirt or handkerchief holder with a shell motif. Skirt lifters were used to raise a lady’s hem temporarily above the mud or to aid in their safety while walking down the staircase. Only a woman of great means would have been able to own a decorative item such as this.
The central seashell is beautifully crafted with nice textured detailing. There is a slide on the shaft attached to the shell that allows it to tighten on the skirt or handkerchief. A chain is attached to a ring, currently a size 4.5.
A rare and interesting find! This piece would make a lovely accessory to complete a bride’s wedding outfit!
